Was It Wise for Pelosi To Endorse Murtha?/Bush's Me-or-Thee Problem

From my "Capital Games" column at www.thenation.com....

This morning, I called Melanie Sloan, the executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog group, to ask about the potential congressional reforms House Speaker-To-Be Nancy Pelosi is expected to push on Day One. But before we got to that, Sloan teed off on Pelosi for having endorsed Representative Jack Murtha, the hawk turned Iraq war critic, in his fight against Representative Steny Hoyer to be the House Democratic majority leader, the powerful number-two job in the body. "Murtha has lots of ethics issues," Sloan exclaimed. "What the hell is she thinking? Corruption turns out to be a major issue in the campaign, and you endorse the guy with the more ethics problems?"

Sloan was referring to exit polls that noted that 42 percent of voters considered corruption and congressional scandals critical to their voting decisions. And she pointed to her outfit's Beyond DeLay site that lists the "20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress." Murtha was not on that roster, but he garnered one of five "Dishonorable Mentions" (along with Republican Representatives Dennis Hastert, the outgoing speaker. J.D. Hayworth, who was defeated in Arizona last week, and Don Sherwood, who was accused by his mistress of choking her and who also lost his bid for reelection).

CREW's low-down on Murtha charges that he abused his position as the senior member of the defense appropriations subcommittee to steer contracts to military firms represented by his brother, a registered lobbyist. The report also notes that Murtha routinely inserted funding earmarks into defense spending bills for contractors that funded his campaigns and hired a lobbying firm run by a former aide on the defense appropriations subcommittee.

Murtha, according to Sloan, was also instrumental in undermining the House ethics committee. In the late 1990s, he successfully pushed (with other legislators) to change the committee's rules to prevent it from accepting ethics complaints from parties outside Congress. He also pressed Democratic leaders to name Representative Alan Mollohan of West Virginia the senior Democrat of the ethics committee. Mollohan has had his own ethics troubles--which have forced him off the ethics committee--and is a member of CREW's Top (or Bottom) 20. (See here.) "Murtha really doesn't like the ethics committee," says Sloan, speculating this may be due to Murtha's involvement in the Abscam bribery scandal of the late 1970s and early 1980s. (The ethics committee chose not to file charges against Murtha, after which the panel's special counsel resigned in protest.) "Murtha seems like a bad choice from our perspective," Sloan said.

The fight to be Pelosi's No. 2 has its odd dynamics. Hoyer is regarded as a centrist sort of Democrat. He's no virgin when it comes to the institutional corruptions of House, readily hitting up corporate interests for campaign cash. But Hoyer has not been accused of ethical violations. Though Murtha advocates a get-out-of-Iraq-now position, he is a hawkish conservative who has attacked Hoyer for being too liberal.

By publicly endorsing Murtha--who has voted more with the Republicans than almost every other House Democrat--Pelosi has backed the fellow who has been less loyal to the party, who has engaged in liberal-baiting, and who is widely considered to be the underdog in the race. Murtha is indeed the Democrats' leading critic of the war, and he and Pelosi, another war opponent, have found themselves in the same foxhole. (Hoyer, like Murtha, voted to give Bush the authority to attack Iraq, but he has not turned on the war and has criticized Democratic calls for withdrawal.) Perhaps Pelosi figured that with the Iraq war likely to be the major source of dispute between her and the White House (and congressional Republicans), she needed an antiwar hawk right by her side. But much of this present tussle might be more personal than policy. Pelosi and Hoyer have long been rivals; she defeated Hoyer to become the Democratic minority leader.

In the Murtha-Hoyer face-off, is the choice ethics versus opposition to the war? Conservative versus centrist? A Pelosi ally versus a Pelosi rival? Whatever it is, siding publicly with Murtha is risky for Pelosi. Should Murtha lose, Pelosi will look like a weak leader--at the start. This is a contest between two imperfect candidates, each carrying different baggage. It might have been wise for her to duck.

ME OR THEE? George W. Bush has a big decision to make: his presidency or his party. Many Republicans--including many on the Hill--want to see their party sharpen its edges (or claws?) and create a more stark contrast with the Dems in preparation for the 2008 elections (The Empire Strikes Back?). That means setting up ideologically oriented battles, not collaborating with Democrats to pass legislation. And they'd like to see the president lead (or, at least, help) with this charge. But Bush has legacy on his mind. Right now, he has to figure this legacy will be dominated by the Iraq war he launched. And, by his own account, this war isn't going to end during his tenure in office. Consequently, he needs to rack up accomplishments on other fronts to add to--that is, counter--the Iraq war legacy. The most likely way to do that is to sign legislation into law. For that to happen, he will have to cooperate (to an extent) with the Democrats. This will put him at odds with the bloodthirsty conservatives of his party. Watch for fun and games on this front in the two years to come.

My pal, Derek McGinty, who hosts the weekly Eye on Washington show (which I appear on regularly), believes divided government will be a godsend for W--for it will lead to legislative accomplishments Bush can claim as his own. Perhaps. Still, I find it hard to believe that this is what Karl Rove was rooting for. Read McGinty's fanciful riff here.

In the Libby Case, A Grilling to Remember

Washington Post
October 27, 2006; A21

With withering and methodical dispatch, White House nemesis and prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald yesterday sliced up the first person called to the stand on behalf of the vice president's former chief of staff.

If I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was not afraid of the special counsel before, the former Cheney aide, who will face Fitzgerald in a trial beginning Jan. 11, had ample reason to start quaking after yesterday's Ginsu-like legal performance.

November 13, 2006 -- ELECTION POST-MORTEM. WE COULD HAVE DONE BETTER, MUCH BETTER.
WMR

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) chairman, Israeli Defense Force vet, and ballet dancer Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois withheld campaign financing from several Democratic House candidates who were running on platforms that were not "vetted" and approved by his coterie of the Democratic leadership. The withholding of funds by Emanuel has been reported to WMR by unsuccessful Democratic House candidates across the country. The Emanuel strategy was at loggerheads with that of Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean whose strategy was to fight a 50 state campaign against the GOP with support for all Democrats.

It is now clear that Dean's strategy was the correct one and that of Emanuel and his fellow Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) anti-Dean partisans (James Carville, Simon Rosenberg, Joe Lieberman, Al From, etc.) was off-base and cost the Democrats an even wider margin of victory in the House and possibly the Senate as well.

For example, take the Florida 15th Congressional District in which retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Bowman ran against entrenched Republican Dave Weldon. Bowman, who won an impressive 44 percent in a strong Republican district, did not receive one cent from the DCCC or the Florida Democratic Party. Weldon raised $727,000 in his campaign while Bowman had a scant $91,279. Another candidate who was ignored by Emanuel was Florida 24th District candidate Clint Curtis, the former programmer who was asked by his opponent Tom Feeney to write a program to flip votes on voting machines in Florida. Curtis beat the favored Democratic candidate -- Andy Michaud -- in the primary. His punishment by the Emanuel clique was no money. Feeney had $1,295,000 in his war chest while Curtis had a mere $44,356. Yet Curtis almost fared as well as Bowman in the strongly Republican district -- he won an impressive 42 percent -- with not one dime from Emanuel's coffers.

It was not just Florida where Emanuel's damage to party candidates emerged. In California's 44th, Democratic candidate Louis Vandenberg, who ran against the extremely corrupt Ken Calvert for the fourth time, was not able to advance beyond 38 percent (what appears to be the Democratic base in the east of Los Angeles district). The major reason again -- no support from Emanuel or the state Democrats. Calvert raised $863,000 while Vandenberg, who this year drew the largest crowds ever in his campaigns, had a paltry $5,174 on hand. Many candidates, not able to leave their regular jobs, were unable to fundraise full time. And the Democratic financiers were not there to lend a hand. And helping to stick it to fellow prospective California Democratic House members was Emanuel pal Rep. Hilda Solis.

It is clear that the DLC did not want certain issues brought to the Democratic House caucus, including 911 Truth (Bowman), pre-911 screw ups (Rowley), voting machine fraud (Curtis), and congressional pederasty (Patty Wetterling, 6th Minnesota district). One can only wonder why the DLC would want to eschew candidates who the Bush administration would find extremely uncomfortable. The answer is simple -- the Republicans and DLC are basically one and the same. Similar foreign and domestic policy goals put them in bed with one another. Its no more complicated than that.

Open Letter To:
US House Of Representatives
Leader Nancy Pelosi
And The US House
Of Representatives
From Jim Kirwan

RE: Your recent comments on Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez,

Because you are unreachable as my US representative, I'm writing this open and illustrated letter to be certain that you have the opportunity to read this for yourself. I'm just one of your constituents, but there are millions just like me.

You said, "Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern-day Simon Bolivar, but all he is, is an everyday thug." And you charged that Chavez "has abused the privilege of speaking at the United Nations." You could learn a lot from this man, Nancy, because he actually represents not only his people, but the vast majority of people in the world. Part of the reason for the United Nations is to provide people from other nations with a forum to do exactly what Chavez did-which was to simply rebut the policies and practices of what has become the military-dictatorship of the USA-Israeli cabal. You have only to note the length of the applause that greeted Chavez's remarks to understand how far from reality your own uninformed positions really are.

You are the supposed 'leader' of the Democratic side of the US House of Representatives, which has to be one of the most criminally-flawed and out-of-touch organizations in the world today. For the last five years you and the vast majority of 'your members' have consistently voted in favor of the junta that has taken over this nation. You of course went along with the attack on Afghanistan, despite the fact that no facts were presented to you or to the Congress, regarding the 'proofs necessary' to warrant such an attack. You voted for the USA Patriot Act, without even reading it and then you voted for the illegal and completely unfounded War-on-Iraq. You personally went ballistic over any attempt to separate US support for Israel from continuing US policy and that's just the barest outline of your failures to represent the people of your district in California, and California in the nation. If Chavez is "a thug"-then what does that make you and the biggest-little corrupted-corporate club in the United States?...

Oversight Ahoy!

James Glanz, David Johnston and Thom Shanker write in the New York Times: "Oversight, the power wielded by congressional committees to demand information and internal documents and to haul executive branch officials to hearings, by subpoena if necessary, is reverberating through Congress as a Democratic battle cry. . . .

"In the Senate, Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who is in line to become chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that seeking a new strategy for Iraq would be his primary focus, but that he would also look carefully at military contracting. . . .

"The Appropriations Committee, which is likely to be led by Representative David R. Obey of Wisconsin, is likely to review more closely spending like large supplementary requests for Iraq and Afghanistan. . . .

"The Senate Judiciary Committee has staff members trying to compile a complete list of unanswered questions.

"Some Democrats said before the election that they would inquire more deeply into some issues, asking for fuller accountability among senior officers and civilian officials at the Pentagon over the harsh treatment of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

"'I think the accountability for Abu Ghraib has not yet been accomplished in terms of finding out who was involved, at what level,' said Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island."

North Korea Says Its Nuclear Weapons Are Designed To Protect South Korea

North Korea said Monday its atomic weapons programme is designed to protect South Korea from a US nuclear threat, and blasted Seoul's main opposition party as traitors over their call for sanctions. Rodong Sinmun, newspaper of the ruling communist party, said the "war deterrent" -- its term for the nuclear programme -- was created to avert moves by "US imperialists" to launch a nuclear war and invade the North.

"It is also meant to protect South Korea, too, with warm compatriotism," the paper added in an analysis which took aim at the Grand National Party (GNP).

"The GNP group is raising a hue and cry over the war deterrent of the north which protects them too, while uttering no bad word about the nukes of the US which threaten the nation," it said.

The GNP has savaged the Seoul government's engagement policy with the North since the October 9 nuclear test, and called for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang.

"The GNP gentry is a group of traitors utterly indifferent to the fellow countrymen and the destiny of the nation," the newspaper said.

It took particular issue with GNP calls for two inter-Korean projects -- the Mount Kumgang tourist resort and the Kaesong industrial estate -- to be shut down after the test. The Seoul-financed projects have earned the North almost one billion dollars since 1998.

"These traitors are desperately insisting on suspending the tour of Mount Kumgang and the project of the Kaesong industrial zone, icons of undertakings for national reconciliation and cooperation," said the analysis carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

The South Korean government announced Monday it will not take any new steps under UN sanctions to punish North Korea for its test and will not join a US-led initiative to inspect cargo to and from the North.

Happy But Not Elated

Make no mistake I am happy with the mid-term elections but I am not elated. I cannot become elated until Nazi Americans return to the true God. As long as Nazi Americans embrace false gods, I can never be elated. Nazi Americans must turn their back on several false gods, such as the bushgod, the chaineygod, the haggardgod, the dobsongod, and the Limbaughgod to mention several false gods of many false gods. These false gods prowl the earth to seek the damnation of human souls.

Unless Nazi Americans embrace the eight words that Jesus has stressed, we will continue to slide deeper and deeper into hell. I would hope that Nazi Americans have etched in their brain the words of Jesus. Here are Jesus’ words, LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU. These words, if embraced by Nazi Americans, will make me elated and I can see Nazi Americans moving toward a path of love, mercy, truth, justice, patience, and peace.

The election is over. The results are in! The Democrats have made slight advances. Hopefully, this election will be the impetus for Democrats to make more gains. Please keep in mind that I still predict that there will be no 2008 elections because the Nazis do not want to give up power and Hitler Bush will declare martial law just before the 2008 election.

If the Democrats made more gains, it would still not change my mind that Nazi America embraces hatred, mass murders, torture war crimes, corruption, decadence, greed, and endless lies.

I have said that the Democrats have made only slight gains at the national level. The Democrats needed to pick up 16 seats in the House and 6 seats in the Senate to control in the House and Senate. If there is an election in 2008, the Nazis will only need to gain 11 seats in the House and 2 seats in the Senate. Please remember that the 2006 voters will the same voters in 2008. Keeping in mind the fickleness of Nazi Americans who knows how the Nazi Americans will vote in 2008?

At the state levels the Democrats did make good strides in taking back our states. Taking back our nation maybe a lost cause, regardless of who controls the House, the Senate, and the White House!

What was a pleasant surprise that in the exit polls Nazi Americans said that ethics does matter. Now, if only the Nazis Americans will embrace moral issues and begin to know the difference between right and wrong, then I will see strong gains at the national level.

Do Not Confront! Investigate!

It is my counsel to the Democrats to not confront Hitler Bush. I would suggest that the Democrats should investigate, especially Hitler Bush’s lies. We need to secure the truth as to why Hitler Bush choose to murder hundreds of thousands human beings. Why did Hitler Bush choose war instead of peace? No sane person would choose war over peace! I believe that Hitler Bush is an insane person.

I also believe that the American people want investigation over confrontation. Six years of confrontation by Hitler Bush toward the American people has emotionally drained our citizens. Yet, the American people do want to know why all the murders?

I wish the Democrats good luck in their investigations of Hitler Bush. These investigations should aid the International Criminal Court at The Hague, Netherlands in their indictment of Hitler Bush as a war criminal. I hope that Hitler Bush’s twenty years in a international prison will be a humble and a miserable experience for a convicted war criminal.

Lockerbie trial was a CIA fix, US intelligence insider claims

THE CIA manipulated the Lockerbie trial and lied about the strength of the prosecution case to get a result that was politically convenient for America, according to a former US State Department lawyer.

Michael Scharf, who was the counsel to the US counter-terrorism bureau when the two Libyans were indicted for the bombing, described the case as "so full of holes it was like Swiss cheese" and said it should never have gone to trial.

He claimed the CIA and FBI had assured State Department officials there was an "iron-clad" case against Abdelbaset al-Megrahi and al-Amin Khalifa Fimah, but that in reality the intelligence agencies had no confidence in their star witness and knew well in advance of the trial that he was "a liar".

Scharf branded the case a "whitewash" and added: "It was a trial where everybody agreed ahead of time that they were just going to focus on these two guys, and they were the fall guys."

The comments by Scharf are controversial, given his position in US intelligence during the Lockerbie investigation and trial. It also comes at a crucial time as the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) is to report in the coming months on whether it believes there was a miscarriage of justice in the case.

Dick Morris' plan may be good politics but doesn't a country deserve the truth about a government that starts wars to secure false WMDs?

The Democrats, for their part, will use their new House majority to plague the administration with investigations. While the left would be appeased by investigations into why we invaded Iraq in the first place, it is financial scandals that will do the greatest damage to Bush and the Republicans.

Democratic committee chairmen will examine Halliburton contracts in Iraq, royalty deals for offshore oil drilling, defense procurement scandals, and resource leases in national forests and wilderness areas. They will examine the nexus between campaign contributions and favors from the trough of the executive branch.

The last two years of the Bush administration will most closely resemble the Clinton years, where scandal after scandal after scandal battered the president’s image and ratings. But, unlike the GOP assault on Clinton, the Democrats will stay on financial issues rather than stray into the personal. The results will be devastating for the Republicans and their prospects in 2008.

Congressman: American Concentration Camps "On The Books"
Texas Representative urges repeal of neo-fascist laws in America before it is too late
Interview With Ron Paul

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
Monday, November 13, 2006

Re-elected Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul joined Alex Jones on air last week to discuss the fallout of the midterm elections and what he sees transpiring over the next two years. He ended by ominously warning that if something is not done soon to overturn legislation such as the Military Commissions act, the law officially allows for citizen concentration camp facilities.

Beginning with the positives to come out of the election, Ron Paul stressed that it has provided an important indication to the rest of the world that the people of America are unhappy with the usurpers that have seized control of their government and are trying to initiate change. The Congressman was quick to point out that this may not be carried into policy however:

"Not a whole lot will change because the leadership on the Democratic side, even if they had their way, don't have a different foreign policy. They have been supportive of an interventionist foreign policy in the middle east, and they are not about to back away from that... They are willing to criticize the policy but only as a means to get power..."
